ABB and Tenova have collaborated to provide advanced technology to Hasçelik, a leading Turkish manufacturer of "special steel." The installation and commissioning of cutting-edge equipment will take place in a new Hasçelik steel plant located in Osmaneli, Turkey, approximately 200 km southeast of Istanbul.
This modern line will include a Consteel Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) featuring the Consteerrer electromagnetic liquid steel stirring system, a ladle furnace, and a twin vacuum degasser, all integrated with a state-of-the-art automation system. The goal is to optimize the steel production process and ensure the delivery of high-quality steel grades.
The selected unit will be Turkey's first continuously charged EAF, offering Hasçelik increased flexibility to handle diminishing scrap availability and maintain high quality steel standards. The continuous charging process enhances robustness against variations in scrap density, quality, and volatile compounds present.
At the core of this advanced system is the new Consteel Evolution, a full-platform EAF with a single-point roof lifting system, designed to enhance energy efficiency, reduce workforce needs, boost reliability, improve productivity, and decrease environmental impact.
The pivotal component of this system is Consteerrer, a technology developed collaboratively by ABB and Tenova. This application, based on ABB’s ArcSave non-contact electromagnetic stirring technology, is tailored specifically for continuous charging EAFs. Consteerrer minimizes thermal losses, increases melting rates, facilitates uniform steel homogenization, and reduces oxygen content in the steel bath.
The technology is adaptable for various EAF setups and can be retrofitted into existing units, offering customized solutions for differing operational needs.
Zaeim Mehraban, ABB’s global sales manager for metallurgy products, emphasizes the significance of process efficiency, particularly amid rising commodity and energy expenses. He highlights the ArcSave-based electromagnetic stirring technology's potential to elevate productivity, efficiency, and sustainability for Hasçelik's electric arc furnace operations.
Davide Masoero, Tenova's area manager for Europe's electric arc and ladle furnace, underlines the critical role of Consteel technology in sustaining high-quality production amidst worsening scrap characteristics.
Naci Faydasiçok, Hasçelik's chairman, expresses the collaborative effort undertaken with Tenova and ABB, outlining the design of a tailored solution aligned with their current and future expansion needs.
Hasçelik Sanayi ve Ticaret, located in Istanbul and Konya, specializes in producing hot-rolled special steel, cold-worked special bright steel, and distributing seamless pipes. As part of the Faydasiçok Holding group of companies, it comprises facilities such as Hasçelik Cold Processing Center and Hasçelik Special Steel Rolling Mill with significant annual production capacities.
